What Has Happened to the Latin Inspired Restaurants?

I really try to be supportive of local restaurants, especially those that stay true to Florida’s heritage. You might be wondering what Florida’s cuisine is about when I make such an assertion. Don’t worry, the rest of the world has the same perception. Very few people understand what influences have combined to make our regional cuisine unique. There are several reasons for this, including lack of consistency, spotty quality and a general lack of attention to normal preparation techniques, not to mention the huge glut of tourist spots around major attractions that mass produce food without a second thought to any real concept.

Update on Bowled and some other news…

Lesa Gigante, a representative from Bowled, had the following to say about the decision to close the restaurant. “Yes it’s true. Michael made the very very difficult decision today to close the doors. We’ve been struggling for a while with high rent, labor cost and just not enough people eating out. We’ve been blessed to have wonderful customers, great reviews and enthusiastic word of mouth. We’ve prided ourselves on great food, a comfortable atmosphere and friendly service. But that just wasn’t enough in this economic climate. We needed more people coming in the door.

A new company comes to Pinellas County in hopes of offering school lunches

Wholesome Tummies, an Orlando-based company has started a franchise outpost here in Pinellas County in hopes of offering what they consider healthier alternatives to students. They are serving almost 5000 meals each day to 27 schools in the greater Central Florida area. Started by two moms, the organization has grown exponentially in its 3 short years of existence. All of their lunch menus have been approved by a pediatric nutritionist at Florida Hospital.

Gulf Voices heard on Capitol Hill today

WASHINGTON – Residents of Florida, Alabama and Louisiana converged on Capitol Hill today to convey to senators what they are going through in the gulf states, discussing loss of jobs and tourism dollars as well as concerns over health due to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico .

Under the categories of rumors and food news

The word is a local chef is opening a new, independent venture with a limited number of tables halfway between St. Petersburg and Tampa. This venture will allow the chef to use some higher-end ingredients in a smaller venue paired with the appropriate wines. I’m excited to see it pan out, and really looking forward to trying it.

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill has become the worst ecological disaster in U.S. history, and continues to adversely affect the lives of residents along the entire Gulf Coast. It is always uplifting to see Americans band together to help each other in such a catastrophe; however, it is disturbing to see the number of unscrupulous people who try to manipulate the misfortune of others for their own personal financial gain. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is issuing this “Consumer Alert” in an attempt to raise the awareness of potential fraud associated with charitable giving during this crisis. Whether the method of contact is by email, websites, fliers, mailings, telephone calls, or even door-to-door solicitations, there are two questions that consumers should ask themselves when considering donating to a charity that purports to be helping with relief efforts following a disaster:

As we heard it:

Some say Gratzzi continues to look for a space in St. Petersburg to re-open after leaving Baywalk at the end of ’09. The word is they looked at the defunct Pacific Wave location, but the rent is still set upwards of $6000 per month. Now, we hear, Gratzzi is looking at the old Wag’s location on Beach Drive to try and join Restaurant Row.
